Donations are pouring in as we reach the final month of our Lifeboat Appeal.

We have until April 5 to raise £150,000 for the new all-weather lifeboat for the west coast.

The Whitehaven News and RNLI are working together, supported by Sellafield Ltd, on the campaign and you’ve already raised more than £110,000.

Workington’s RNLI crew is gearing up for The Dorothy May White , a Shannon-class vessel, to be delivered to the Workington lifeboat station next month.

The £2.1 million boat replaces the Sir John Fisher , which has been in service since 1992.

The Sir John Fisher has been called on to assist people 276 times, saved 73 lives and carried 324 people safely ashore.

The Sir John Fisher Foundation has also made a significant contribution, and Cavendish Nuclear, which employs 300 people at the Sellafield site and Westlakes Science Park, Moor Row, has donated £5,000.

Paul Smith, managing director, UK projects, said: “Supporting the Lifeboat Appeal was an easy decision for both Cavendish Nuclear and, personally, for myself.

“From a company perspective, we employ 300 people in Cumbria some of whom may have or could require the future help of the RNLI.

“On a personal note, a large part of my own pastimes revolve around the sea.

“While I have both been fortunate enough not to have required the direct support of the RNLI, we are all acutely aware of the inherent dangers of the sea and the respect it deserves.

“My personal involvement with the charity coupled with the desire and moral obligation to support the local community absolutely makes this the right decision for Cavendish Nuclear.”

Cavendish Nuclear has funded the fuel cost for the annual Maryport Trawler race for several years.

NRL Group, which has branches across Cumbria, including Egremont, recently presented £2,500 to the appeal. Andrew Redmayne, NRL Group chief executive, said: “Our business has always taken the role we play in our communities very seriously and actively encourage all our branches to support local causes.

“We really hope that our fundraising activities and donations make a difference. We are thrilled that we can support the Workington RNLI with this vital appeal and hope these dedicated volunteers reach their target.”

John Stobbart, coxswain of Workington lifeboat, added: “I would like to thank Cavendish Nuclear and NRL Group for their contribution to the new Workington lifeboat.”
