LED Zeppelin legend Robert Plant is set to rock Egremont.

Plant – widely considered one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll performers of all time – will play a charity concert in the Market Hall as a favour to his friend, Egremont-born musician Francis Dunnery.

Led Zeppelin – Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham – formed in 1968 and are cited to be one of the most important bands in music history.

In 2008, editors of the influential magazine Rolling Stone ranked Plant as 15th on their list of the 100 best singers of all time, and in 2011, readers ranked Plant the greatest of all lead singers.

He will play a guest slot on Saturday, October 24, alongside Francis Dunnery at the annual benefit concert for the Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children’s Fund (CKDCF), the charity he created in memory of his parents.

Also on the bill are Big Big Train, Peter Jones, Dorie Jackson, John and Wayne, John Mitchell, Andrea and Bennedetta, John Gilmour Smith and John Bentley.

Mark Andrews, Francis’ friend and the local face of CKDCF, said: “Francis toured with Robert Plant in the early 90s and then met him last month and asked him if he would come to Egremont.

“When I was arranging the publicity, I found myself typing ‘Robert Plant at Egremont Market Hall’ and it sounded surreal! He will put the charity in the public eye, which can only benefit us.”

The concert has sold out, however people are still able to get involved in a weekend of events for CKDCF, which makes regular donations to local charities that benefit children.

It begins with a welcome dinner at The Seacote in St Bees on Friday, October 23, with live music including a set from Mike Peters from The Alarm. And the annual sponsored walk around Ennerdale takes place the following morning. Walkers are asked to meet at 10am at Bowness Knott car park.
