Labour candidate Gillian Troughton has spoken out for the first time since she lost the battle to become Copeland's new MP.

It follows a historic by-election as Trudy Harrison, for the Conservatives, won the seat.

Mrs Troughton said:"I am disappointed not to have won this election but I am immensely proud of the campaign we ran. All of my campaign team have been absolutely invaluable and shown such dedication.

"I had the support of hundreds of Labour members, MPs and Councillors from Cumbria and beyond who came and campaigned for me and they are a credit to the labour movement.

"Trudy Harrison, as our new MP, has a tremendous responsibility to represent the people of Copeland and fulfil the promises made in this election. I wish her well in that.

"I will continue to work for the people of Copeland and continue to fight for the values that I believe in, of fairness, equality and good public services that everyone can access.”

There was five other candidates contesting the Labour-held seat.

They were Ukip's Fiona Mills, the Liberal Democrats' Rebecca Hanson, the Green Party's Jack Lenox and independents Michael Guest and Roy Ivinson.

The results were:
