Keeping safe was the message for Whitehaven school pupils as part of a junior citizens scheme.

Children from St James Junior School, Hensingham Primary School and Jericho School were given advice on internet safety, drug and alcohol awareness, stranger danger, fire safety and anti-social behaviour.

They were visiting Workington Fire Station, the town's police station and Maryport Inshore Rescue as part of a national scheme to help them deal with potential dangers.

PC Lindsey Irving, children and young person's officer for Cumbria police, said: "It's all about personal safety and personal responsibility and trying to keep Cumbria and our children as safe as possible.

"It means that when they have dilemmas and problems they've got the knowledge to help themselves and others."

Tracy Routledge, crew member at Maryport Inshore Rescue, said: "It's very important and they will be able to teach the younger children that are coming up.

"It's about making them think about what their doing and their actions."

Children were each given activity workbooks to take home as part of the scheme.
