SINGING sensation Jolan is set to switch on Whitehaven’s Christmas lights tomorrow (Sunday).

A host of activities are taking place to mark the launch of the town’s Winter Wonderland festive events.

A four-day Christmas and continental market started on Thursday in Whitehaven’s Market Place until tomorrow.

Entertainment is taking place in the town centre tomorrow from midday. Singer Jolan Gidney-Craigen, who was a runner-up on this year’s series of The Voice , will be turning on the lights at 5pm.

An evening concert will be held with Jolan headlining with singing support from Julieanne Kelly. The event at Whitehaven Civic Hall will also feature outdoor food and drink stalls.

Free parking is available on Copeland Council car parks and ones run by Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners from noon.

Darren Elliot, chairman of Whitehaven Town Council’s Christmas committee, said: “I think it’s going to be a joyful day for both young and old. We have various things going on including reindeer and the Jolan concert. We are also selling raffle tickets for a meet and greet with Jolan.”

Money raised from the raffle is set to go to Mayfield School and Parkinsons.

Entertainment will take place across the town centre.

It will include street theatre, Whitehaven Brass Band, and Ragtime Rascals. There will be fire service demonstrations as well as animal magic reindeer and sleigh rides.

Features on Lowther Street will include Darling Manor princesses, a magical carriage ride and Cumbria Super Heroes.

There will also be the traditional fun fair.

Local stars are set to feature on the CFM stage.

Whitehaven’s St James Pre-School will have a stall to raise funds for new equipment. There will be a ‘guess the name of the reindeer’ competition, a raffle and even reindeer dust for sale.

There is set to be an ice rink at Whitehaven’s Castle Park from November 26. The application, which is set to go before Copeland Council next week, is recommended for approval.
