Calls from Cumbria are mounting for Jeremy Corbyn to quit as Labour leader.

And one county MP has warned that to have the under-pressure leader at the helm going into a general election would be the “worst thing to happen in Labour party history”.

Copeland’s Jamie Reed predicts there will be a General Election within months.

He spoke as the party’s leadership woes hit crisis point following a raft of shadow cabinet resignations and a vote of no confidence looming against Mr Corbyn.

Mr Reed has always been among the most outspoken of those who did not agree that Mr Corbyn was the right man for the job.

“Jeremy is, by common consent, a nice man – but he does not have the quality, ability or instinct to lead the Labour Party,” he said.

“He doesn’t have the qualities to be prime minister – and he doesn’t want to be prime minister either.”

Mr Corbyn faced a hostile meeting with Labour MPs and peers who told him he must quit last night.

And, in extraordinary scenes, Barrow MP John Woodcock and Mr Corbyn’s press spokesman rowed in front of journalists in Parliament’s committee corridor.

Despite the “overwhelming” criticism from across the parliamentary party, Mr Corbyn’s aides insisted he would not be quitting.

Asked why the revolt against Mr Corbyn had come now, Mr Reed said the EU referendum result had been a tipping point.

“We want to win,” he admitted. “We can’t do anything from the sidelines. My opposition to Jeremy has never been personal, it’s always been about his political beliefs and the way he undertakes politics.”

There were said to be a number of strikes against the party leader, beginning with his opposition to Trident – which goes against Labour party policy – and including a failure to capitalise on Iain Duncan Smith’s resignation and his “appalling response” to the terror attack in Paris.

“[In the EU referendum] Jeremy was appealing to people to vote one way,” Mr Reed explained, “and then his team and he were refusing to share the data we had with the Stronger In campaign.

“The word being used is that he ‘purposely’ sabotaged that campaign, and all the evidence seems so.”

He added: “The market is tanking. The pound is sinking. We have no Government and no opposition.

“Now is precisely the time to try and remove the Labour Party leader.

“There’s likely to be a general election within months – and the notion of going into that election with Jeremy Corbyn as leader is unconscionable.”

Mr Reed believes that whoever becomes Conservative leader will want their own mandate so will call a general election.

However, just because the ministers want Jeremy Corbyn out, does not mean it will be that straightforward.

Mr Corbyn was elected leader with a large mandate, and was unquestionably the overwhelming choice of party members.

“The world has changed,” said Mr Reed.

he has vowed to spend “night and day” fighting to ensure the UK’s departure from the EU does not threaten the Cumbrian projects he has spent 12 years fighting for.
