An investigation is under way to see if a controversial wind turbine has breached planning permission.

Copeland Borough Council awarded permission for a 45.5m turbine at Drigg Moorside Farm in June 2013 – despite strong local opposition – on the condition that work must take place within three years.

A complaint has now been lodged with the council alleging that the work has not been completed in the specified timeframe.

An investigation will now take place to see how much of the work was carried out before the deadline.

Copeland’s planning development manager, Nick Hayhurst, said: “I can confirm the matter is currently being investigated.

“We are aware that activity commenced on site just prior to planning permission expiring on June 13, and need to establish what work has been undertaken.”
