A West Cumbrian nail bar has been fined £30,000 for employing illegal immigrant workers, it has been revealed.

Immigration officials raided Diamond Nails in Workington yesterday and arrested two illegal workers.

Immigration Enforcement revealed it was the second time the business had been visited by officers.

A raid in November of Diamond Nails' Whitehaven branch, on Church Street, found three illegal workers and resulted in the £30,000 fine, which has not been paid.

Officers found two illegal workers – a 22-year-old man from Vietnam whose application for asylum had been refused and a 21-year-old Vietnamese woman who had entered the country illegally – at Diamond Nails, on Oxford Street, Workington.

Under new powers, Immigration Enforcement can close any business for 48 hours while it applies for an order for the business to comply to stricter measures over its staff and allow immigration officers to inspect the premises.

The order, if successful, would apply to all branches of the nail bar.

The two illegal workers have been arrested. It is not known what happened to the three people arrested in Whitehaven last year.
