Nearly 30 visitors brought their pictures along and were able to sample the further delights of school log books, 19th century punishment books, admission registers and calligraphic exercise in English and Latin.
Lesley Park, archives assistant, said: “Genuine exam and test questions from archive files had more than one former teacher shaking their heads, and the cringeworthy content of some of the old school magazines brought a level of hilarity not usually seen in the classroom.”
Discovery Open Evenings are held at Whitehaven Archive and Local Studies Centre on the third Tuesday of each month.
Archive documents are set out on display and refreshments are available. Entry is free. The next session is Tuesday, October 18. The theme will be shipping, folklore and ghost tales.
Whitehaven Archive and Local Studies Centre is next to the police station on Scotch Street. Doors open at 7pm.
