TWO drop-in sessions to discuss maternity services are taking place in Copeland today (Thursday).

And it’s a chance for women and families to have their say about what they want and don’t want from their service.

The responses will be fed into an independent review being carried out by health chiefs into the viability of keeping a 24-hour maternity service at West Cumberland Hospital. This is the preferred option, however, the service could be downgraded to a midwifery unit only if chiefs decide the cost, viability and risks make it unfeasible.

The drop-ins and a survey has been organised by Healthwatch Cumbria, working closely with the Maternity Services Liaison Committees. The events are being held from 11am to 1pm at Whitehaven Senhouse Centre and from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at Egremont Methodist Church.

They are seeking views about what is important at all stages of pregnancy and want to hear from women who have used maternity services in the last five years, as well as their partners, families and birth supporters.

Surveys are available and should be completed by November 30 and can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/r/maternityviews

More than 860 responses have been received over the past three weeks. People can also email: info@healthwatchcumbria.co.uk
