Legends of the cricketing game and Cockermouth's most famous son Ben Stokes wowed crowds at the PCA Masters event.

Cockermouth Cricket Club played host to the event with hundreds of fans flocking to see top names including Mark Ramprakash, Steve Harmison, Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood and Graham Onions, alongside Stokes.

Workington Reds director Steve Durham was among the crowd that flocked to Cockermouth to watch the PCA Masters in action.

"There are lots of kids involved which is fantastic to see, they are all having a great day," he said.

"This is great for Cockermouth Cricket Club and for Cumbria in general. We have top class players and the main man himself Ben Stokes.

"The whole day is a credit to everyone involved."

The day began with an Under-11 Kwik Cricket tournament which saw teams from Cockermouth, Workington, Whitehaven, Egremont, Wigton and Penrith all take part.

And they were rewarded for their efforts with medals and certificates presented by Ben Stokes at the close, with Penrith eventually winning the final against Cockermouth Gold.

Former England cricketing legends including Owais Shah, Mal Lloye and Alex Tudor provided a masterclass for youngsters before the main event itself.

And it even catered for the youngest cricket fans with Cockermouth's All Stars show-casing their newly learned skills.

Claire Rawlinson, junior co-ordinator at Cockermouth CC, was delighted with the event.

She said: "We have had a fantastic day, with 75 children playing Kwik cricket and around 100 involved on the day in total aged between four and 15.

"To have Ben here is such a big thing for the club. To have him as our most famous son and for him to do all of this for us is fantastic.

"We are all really proud of him and so are all the kids, they were just so excited to meet him."

Simon Canfield, who coaches Workington's under-11s, said the tournament had been fantastic for the children. He added: "The children are staying to watch the game and they met all of the players like Ben Stokes, Steve Harmison and Mark Ramprakash, which they really enjoyed.

"The good thing is they came and watched the games so it was a great opportunity to play in front of the stars. "It bigs up the profile of cricket in the area and hopefully gets more people to go down to their local club and get involved."

Cricket fans and players from across the county descended on the ground for the big game itself where 12 players from Cockermouth took on the former England legends in an exciting fast-paced Twenty20 game.

Michelle Scott, of Workington, was there with her family and looking forward to seeing the household names.

She said: "It is fantastic for all the kids and there was some good cricket on display played in a fantastic spirit.

"We are looking forward to seeing some of the big names from recent years playing, especially Mark Ramprakash!"
