Hundreds of pounds were collected for a cancer charity after a primary school fundraiser.

St Bridget's Catholic Primary School, in Egremont, held its annual coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support, raising £514.

It also invited student's grandparents into the school on the same day to play bingo to mark National Grandparents Day.

Headteacher Suzanne Smith said: "We were overwhelmed by the turn out of grandparents for the bingo. The children were delighted.

"When I said to one grandparent I hadn't realised they loved bingo so much she said, 'It's not the bingo we love, we love the school'.

"What a lovely and heartening thing to say! The bingo and the coffee afternoon were a huge success and due to the generosity of our parents and grandparents we raised £514 for Macmillan.

"There was a wonderful feeling of community spirit and we know the money will be used to help those most in need."

Year six children at the school had been visited by Age UK, which held a workshop on grandparents. They wrote poems and created artwork based on their own grandparents.

Pupils at the school have also been presented with the Margaret Woodburn Trophy for winning a bowling competition organised by Egremont Town Council.

It is the second year they have won the primary school competition, which is named after the town council's former clerk.

Egremont bowling club president Jim Wise and town councillor Jacqui Smith handed over the trophy.
