A grandfather who was seriously injured in a biking accident has raised around £3,900 for the Great North Air Ambulance.

Derek Tunstall, from Arlecdon, has tackled a six-day 210-mile mountain bike ride from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay to raise cash in aid of his rescuers.

It follows an incident in November 2015 in which Mr Tunstall was riding on Ullock Pike ridge near Bassenthwaite, when he came off his bike. The air ambulance service (GNAAS) and mountain rescue went to his aid.

The 64-year-old suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs. He attempted to walk back to his car but it became increasingly difficult. “A passer-by said I didn’t look too well and I should get help. That’s when I called 999,” he said.

GNAAS doctor Laura Duffy and paramedic Andy Dalton swiftly came to the rescue.

Derek, who himself was a mountain rescue team member for nearly 30 years, said: “They were all brilliant, they knew exactly what to do.”
