Keen rugby players from a Copeland club will be able to attend the Super League grand final after an action-packed fundraiser.

Youngsters from Lowca Rugby League Club will watch Castleford Tigers take on Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Saturday.

The fun day was organised by a group of parents who didn't want the children to miss out due to financial issues.

Carrie Canavan, one of the organisers, said £2,000 was collected on the day.

"It was a great turnout. Everyone had such a good day and we raised a fortune," she said.

"We're off to the grand final on Saturday, unfortunately Lowca haven't been chosen as mascots but we will still have an awesome day. I'm absolutely thrilled with the support from people.

"Some parents couldn't afford to go and we decided that money shouldn't be a problem for kids to have opportunities."

Earlier this year, the youngsters took to the field before the start of a legends game between Yorkshire and Lancashire at Leeds Rhino's Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

The under nine team walked on to the pitch alongside Jamie Peacock, Adrian Morley, Keith Senior and other former stars while the under sevens and eights played a game before kick off.

However, the club's application to supply mascots for the final was unsuccessful.

The players, who are coached by Carl Ennis, Stewart Ennis, Ian Thompson and Darren Lynch, also hope to secure a place at 2018's Magic Weekend.

Mrs Canavan said: "Our kids breathe rugby league and they absolutely love training at Lowca. The coaches are so dedicated. We just want to do what we can for them."

Saturday's fun day included bouncy castles, food and drink stalls, crafts and handmade stalls, face painting and pony rides. It was followed by a race night.
