ONE mountain rescue team was called out four times in less than 48 hours.

Wasdale volunteers received two almost simultaneous emergency calls yesterday (Sunday) morning.

The first saw them called to help a walker reportedly suffering from hypothermia while climbing down Scafell Pike.

Fearing the worst, the team called for assistance from the S-92 helicopter from Prestwick.

However, once the volunteers had reached the walker, the team doctor assessed him and found he was not as unwell as first feared.

Instead, the team carried him on a stretcher to the valley, where he was taken for treatment.

While responding to the Scafell incident, a second call for help came from two walkers who were cragfast near Piers Gill.

The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team was called to help and found the pair between Piers and Straight Gill. They were walked back to the valley.

Wasdale had already responded to a call the night before, for a walker who had been separated from their group.

They were found near the head of Piers Gill using Sarloc, and a small team of rescuers met them on the hill and helped walk them off.

It was the second such incident of the weekend, after a group had reported a walker separated from their group on Saturday morning. However, they turned up while the team was mobilising.

A spokesman said: “We would always encourage groups to stick together and know where each member is at all times.”
