The return of Gosforth Flower Festival following a six year break has been hailed a huge success.

Imaginative displays based around the harvest theme were placed in the village's St Mary's Church and attracted crowds of people at the weekend.

To kick-start the event on Friday morning, Gosforth Primary School held its annual harvest festival at the church and in the evening dozens of people attended a concert.

The event continued over Saturday and yesterday and those involved say it was a brilliant weekend.

Church warden Norma Hughes said: "It went very well. We had lots of visitors, especially on the Sunday, it was a lovely weekend.

"We had people from the village visiting and people from all around. We even had a couple who live in the south of England who got married in the church and were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary – they were delighted to find out it was special weekend."

The main arrangements were made by Whitehaven Flower Club, with other donations coming from villagers, the school and nursery.

Displays included the feeding of the 5,000 and even the children's popular book The Scarecrow’s Wedding.

Mrs Hughes paid a special thank you to the main organiser Ann McKenzie who is a member of the church and Whitehaven Flower Club.
