A charity knitting event will be held at Florence Arts Centre alongside the screening of a new documentary.

Florence’s knit ’n’ natter group are joined by organisers of the 60 Million Trebles charity project for a special screening of Yarn: The Movie . The documentary by Montreal-based Icelandic director Una Lorenzen focuses on a handful of global artists whose work explores the possibilities contained in a skein of yarn.

The art centre’s knitters will also take part in an attempt to break the world record for the largest yarn blanket, which will require an estimated 13,000 36 inch squares. At the end of 2015 the UN estimated that there are approximately 60 million refugees worldwide. The #60MillionTrebles project aims to create a yarn blanket containing 60 million trebles/stitches, one to represent each refugee.

The blanket will be designed with a centre panel containing crocheted flags of the world symbolising that the refugees crisis is a worldwide issue, with another panel of squares made by children representing the millions of youngsters who have little future.

From noon on November 6 there will be a special knit ‘n’ natter meet-up dedicated to making squares for the project. The documentary will be screened at 3pm. For further information visit www.florenceartscentre.com or visit Florence Arts Centre on Facebook.
