The family of a "beloved husband and treasured dad" who was killed at a Cumbrian scrap yard have paid tribute to his life.

Paul Spence, 64, died on Thursday in a forklift incident at Michael Douglas Auto Salvage Ltd in Carlisle.

A tribute released on behalf of Mr Spence's family said: "Paul was a well-known and much respected garage owner in Skipton, renowned for his cheeky smile and wicked sense of humour."

His family described him as a hard-working family man who was a gifted tradesman.

"He could turn his hand to anything and had the ability to take everything in his stride.

"He had a passion for classic and fast cars, particularly restoring them.

"He also had a love for rock music, especially watching local bands with friends, enjoyed with a pint of Guinness," said his family.

Many messages received by the family said, "you couldn't meet a nicer guy."

Mr Spence, of Skipton, leaves his wife Sandra, daughters Maria and Samantha, brother Derek and sister Janet.

His family would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene and friends and family for the extended support that is being offered at this difficult time.

Mr Spence was a customer at the site when the incident occurred on Thursday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Spence's death.

A spokesman for the force said: "The death occurred when a customer became trapped by a piece of machinery.

"Mr Paul Spence, 64, was treated by North West Ambulance Service and the air ambulance but sadly died at the scene."

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have information in regards to the incident who has yet to come forward.
