A HEROIN-using former soldier who became a cannabis dealer was told by a judge: “It really is time that you sorted yourself out.”

Ian Flinn, 29, was being sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court having admitted supplying cannabis and possessing amphetamine when the comment was made by Judge Barbara Forrester.

Flinn’s offence came to light on January 9 when police saw him riding a pedal cycle and carried out a search.

“He was found to be in possession of a small wrap of amphetamine,” said prosecutor Kim Whittlestone, who added that his criminal supply kit also included “a bag of cannabis bush, three small deal bags of cannabis bush, a small set of scales and a mobile phone”.

“Text messages indicated that other users appeared to be requesting cannabis from this defendant and likewise him from others.”

Jamie Baxter, defending, said Flinn had a substantial criminal record linked to heroin use.

Mr Baxter added: “This is a man who clearly needs help.”

Judge Forrester gave Flinn a suspended six-month jail term along with unpaid work, a curfew and a rehabilitation requirement.

The judge told Flinn, of Royal Drive, Egremont: “It really is about time that you sorted yourself out and get this drug problem under control.”
