A Gardeners' Question Time-style event is to take place at Santon Bridge Village Hall as part of a fundraising drive to secure the venue’s future.

Broadcaster Eric Robson, who lives in Wasdale, has agreed to chair the event on Sunday, June 18 at 2pm.

Gardening professionals, who will answer questions from the audience, are Glyn Sherratt, head gardener at Holker Hall; local landscaper and gardener Chris Steele and Sue Tasker, freelance gardener, consultant and author.

The event is part of a funding drive to raise £32,000 by July 2018, with the total now standing at £15,500.

Ian Warren, chairman of the hall’s committee, said: “The village hall is held on a lease which is running out – and if it does the community could lose the use of the hall. So we have negotiated a time limited option to buy the freehold and we are asking for donations and holding fundraising events to help us achieve this.

“We have until July 2018 to raise £32,000 and any donation, however large or small, would be welcome. The easiest way to do this is on-line via the Mydonate website – just visit the Santon Bridge Village Hall page.”

Tickets (£5 to include tea/coffee) for the gardening event need to be bought in advance and can be booked through Louise Stewart on 019467 24562 or email henry.stewart@btinternet.com

A plant sale will also take place alongside the Gardeners’ Question Time, starting at 1pm on the day. Any donations of plants for the sale would be very welcome – email info@hallflatfarm.co.uk to arrange.

Further planned fund raising events include a concert by well known local band The Roosters, a Ready, Steady, Cook-style event and a fashion show.
