A man suffering a facial injury has been taken to West Cumberland Hospital.

Emergency services were called to an incident in the area of Birley Court, in Whitehaven town centre, at around 4pm today.

Police say they initially received reports of a fight and criminal damage to a door.

A police spokesperson said: "A man was taken to West Cumberland Hospital with a facial injury. It is not known at this time how it was caused."

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said they were called to a private property, in that area, at 3.50pm. A rapid response vehicle and an ambulance attended.

She confirmed a patient was taken to West Cumberland Hospital. However, she was unable to provide any further details.

A nearby resident said she heard "a lot of people shouting and crying" at the time. She said others went to see what was happening.

The witness says she then saw a man being taken away in an ambulance.
