A WOMAN who died following a crash on a busy Cumbrian road yesterday has been named.

Elizabeth Bailey, aged 51 and from Egremont, has been formally identified as the woman who died at the scene. She was driving a Nissan Micra at the time.

The crash on the A595 near Wigton also involved a HGV. It happened at about 2.20pm.

The driver of the HGV, a 51-year-old man from Workington, suffered serious injuries.

The road was closed between the B5305 junction near Wigton and the Thursby roundabout for a number of hours while police carried out detailed investigations at the scene.

A complex operation was also launched to recover the lorry, which was trapped on a steep slope among dense trees.

Fire, ambulance and air ambulance crews were also at the scene.

The Great North Air Ambulance said they worked together to free the lorry driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle three quarters of the way down a steep wooded embankment.

After being freed he was stabilised at the scene before being flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious back, leg, pelvis and chest injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call police on 101.
