A caring scout group enjoyed a night of music, cake and games to raise money for two charities.

The 1st Egremont Beaver Scouts held its annual charity night to support Macmillan Cancer Support and Give Us A Break 2010.

Youngsters manned cake and coffee stalls and led games, including a treasure hunt and guess the number of sweets in a jar, collecting £233.

The Beavers were supported by other groups, such as the Cubs and Scouts, with one scout playing the piano at the event.

"It went really well," said Beavers leader Anne Mawson. "We're splitting the money between Macmillan Cancer Support and Give Us A Break.

"We've been supporting them for quite a while, we wanted a local charity and an ex-Beavers' mother was involved with Give Us A Break. It's important to help local causes."

Give Us A Break 2010 aims to provide short breaks for children with disabilities and their families. While Macmillan tries to improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same.

Mrs Mawson said: "The Beavers worked towards putting on the night, it gets them to understand everyone isn't as lucky as them.

"They really enjoyed it, they kept pestering people to guess how many sweets were in the jar."

The scout group, for boys and girls aged from six to eight years, recently celebrated its 30th birthday after it was set up by Mrs Mawson and Maureen Pyke in 1987.
