An annual horse ride helped raise £1,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance.

Egremont Horse Show Society held its 17th sponsored ride to collect funds for the charity, which rescues hundreds of injured or ill patients every year.

Forty-five riders took part in the event, on a wide variety of horses and ponies, and rode either five, 12 or 15 miles despite pouring rain.

The ride began at Florence Mine Heritage Centre and followed a route around the Uldale and Lowther Forests, taking in Haile and Wilton.

Ride organiser Barbara Stephenson said: "The star of the day was the youngest competitor, eight year-old Summer Shackley from St Bees, riding her pony Bobby. She raised an amazing £325 in sponsor money."

Summer was presented with a rosette and a trophy for her fundraising efforts. The annual ride has previously raised thousands of pounds for a number of local charities, including Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Wasdale Mountain Rescue.

The Great North Air Ambulance, which flies three air ambulance helicopters across Cumbria, the North East and North Yorkshire, relies on public donations to continue its work.
