The recycling site in Egremont has been relocated and reopened this week, after arson attacks forced the council facility to close.

Copeland Borough Council has moved the site from Chapel Street car park to Beck Green car park.

The new site is more visible than the previous site, which the council said it hoped would deter misuse.

The site has been used for many years as the temporary recycling site location during Crab Fair week.

In an effort to make the site less prone to damage harder for criminals, the new site will now only house plastic and cardboard containers.

Glass, cans and paper are all collected fortnightly by the council’s black box kerbside collection service.

Janice Carol, the council's waste and enforcement manager, said: "We are pleased to be able to reintroduce this popular facility to the people of Egremont, and we are also pleased to have the opportunity to promote kerbside recycling, a service which is available to almost every property in Egremont, allowing residents to recycle easily.

“We are thankful for the support of local councillors and residents while the council looked for a suitable solution. We hope the new site at Beck Green provides a safe and reliable place for residents to recycle.

"We appreciate there are some concerns from residents about vandalism and arson, however the council will be monitoring the site very closely over the coming months."
