Thousands of revellers are expected to pour into Egremont as the Crab Fair returns for its 749th year.

Stunt shows, live music and the World Gurning Championships are all part of the entertainment over an action-packed weekend.

Multiple champion Tommy Mattinson will be looking to regain his crown after Gordon Blacklock surprisingly stole victory last year.

And new queen Madison Robb, 11, of Orgill, is ready to take centre stage at this year's fair.

Tonight includes performances from 2011 X Factor finalist Kitty Brucknell and the Midnight Soul Sisters, a Motown tribute act featuring Bupsi Brown, an X Factor finalist from 2015.

Music begins at 5.30pm and the fancy dress wheelbarrow race starts at Egremont Rugby League club at 6.15pm.

The pipe smoking takes place on the main stage at 7.45pm.

Tomorrow, Jez Avery's bike stunt show is set to wow visitors alongside a bird of prey display.

Street racing, an exhibition of classic and vintage vehicles and greasy pole entertainment are part of the packed schedule.

The fair finishes in the Market Hall with night time entertainment from Don McKay, a junior talent contest and the World Gurning Championships.

"The excitement is starting to build, we are hoping for good weather and a good turnout. The last two years have been exceptional," says Crab Fair secretary Callum Scott.

"Next year is a huge 750th anniversary and we are already planning a showstopper event we welcome new and old visitors to our event and thank you all for your support."

Youngsters have been getting into the Crab Fair spirit by pulling their best faces in preparation for the weekend's festivities.

Pupils at St Bridget's Catholic Primary School and Bookwell Primary School have been showing off their favourite gurns.

Primary school children have also been taking part in an apple designing
competition with an iPod shuffle up for grabs for the winner.
