CRASH courses in learning to fly a drone are coming to an Egremont art centre later this month.

Florence Arts Centre is offering the opportunity for visitors to try out the latest drone technology and learn how they are manoeuvred.

In partnership with Abandon Normal Devices, the workshops, which take place on Sunday, August 28, are designed to teach people about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

"It's something we have been involved with before, they facilitate opportunities for artists. We had planned to have them as part of our open day earlier in the year but it had to be postponed," said Craig Carruthers, building and marketing manager at Florence.

"This time it's a one-off by itself, they're bringing nano drones which they use a lot during their art installations and people will be able to compete against each other."

Abandon Normal Devices is a Manchester-based arts collective which specialises in new approaches to art-making and digital invention.

It is looking to develop projects which abandon traditional settings and push the boundaries of audience experience.

The sessions will include piloting a nano drone through an obstacle course and competing with friends or family in mini-missions to become the top pilot.

Craig said: "We're hoping for a good turnout, it's just a drop-in and we're open from about 11am. Anyone can come along."

The workshops are suitable for all the family but under 14s must be accompanied by an adult. No prior drone experience is needed as practice drones will be provided.

It is free to participate and more information can be found at www.florencemine.com or www.andfestival.org.uk
