Thugs who attacked three men in a drink-fuelled frenzy have been jailed.

Scott Hannon, Stephen McDowell and Calvin Partickson carried out their crimes in both Workington and Whitehaven, leaving their victims suffering from the effects of violence.

They all appeared at Carlisle Crown Court for sentencing.

Hannon was also there to be punished for several other crimes.

Judge Tony Lancaster, told them their action caused great concern to "ordinary decent people".

The trio carried out their attacks on June 30 last year after they had been drinking heavily in several bars around Workington.

"They were, to use the colloquial expression, pumped up," said Michael Maher, prosecuting.

After drinking in a pub the trio walked up Tangier Street, where they met their first victim.

They chased him and caught up with him before knocking him to the floor and then punching and kicking him. He was left with facial injuries and suffered pain to his right hip as a result of the attack.

He was walking near Workington's harbour.

Mr Maher added: "He heard someone say 'what are you looking at' and then felt a bang to his head, fell to the floor and then he was set upon. He was taken to hospital and found to have a fractured right cheek and bruises to his head and legs."

Their third victim was "minding his own business" on a bench beside Whitehaven harbour when he was approached by the trio, along with some women.

"They said 'if you do not fight us we will stab you," Mr Maher told the court.

McDowell appeared pleaded guilty to two charges - common assault and assault causing grievous bodily harm. Patrickson had pleaded guilty to two charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and one of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Hannon pleaded guilty to two charges of assault causing actual bodily harm. He had also admitted three unrelated assault charges from January 2015 - one on the 10th of the month and two on the 24th - as well as a violent disorder offence from July 17 last year.

Sentencing, Judge Lancaster said: "Nothing causes as much concern to ordinary decent people going about their daily business and their leisure than drunk young people who though boredom or a lack of self-discipline pick on people, especially people on their own and are violent towards them.

"That theme runs throughout this indictment."

He sentenced McDowell, 22, of Eskdale Crescent, Workington to 20 months in prison.

Patrickson, 21, of Lindisfarne Street, off London Road, Carlisle, was also jailed for 20 months.

Hannon, 19, of Wastwater Avenue, Workington, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and will be subject to a year-long order when he is released banning him from pubs and clubs in Workington and Whitehaven and from contacting his fellow defendants.
