A DRINK-DRIVER crashed his car and fled the scene - only two weeks after getting his licence.

Daniel Robinson, 23, was caught hiding in the car park of the Travellers Rest pub in Workington, following the crash at the nearby Castle Gardens on the A595.

His Ford Fiesta had left the road after clipping a kerb and crashed into a verge on June 25, West Cumbria Courthouse heard on Friday. When Robinson - and his male passenger - were located by the police, he was found to have been over the drink-drive limit.

Robinson, of Irish Street, Whitehaven, admitted drink-driving having provided a breath sample of 79mcgms; more than twice the limit of 35. He pleaded guilty to a further charge of resisting arrest.

He was banned from driving for 20 months and must pay a £320 fine plus £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Solicitor Ian Nancollis, for Robinson, said: "It was a stupid decision to drive and he has learned a salutary lesson. He feels lucky nobody was injured."
