DANGEROUS parking on Main Street, Egremont, is causing problems for disabled residents, according to a local campaign group.

Cars have been parking on the pavement causing problems for all pedestrians. But it has made navigating the street particularly difficult for blind people and wheelchair users, it is claimed.

The issue was raised at a recent meeting of Copeland Disability Forum, which works for equality for people with physical disabilities.

Linda Wilson, an Egremont resident and deputy chair of the forum, said: “There are a lot of cars that park on the pavement. It’s difficult for any pedestrians, especially with a buggy, a wheelchair or someone, like myself, who is totally blind.

“It’s the whole street – drivers seem to be so inconsiderate. I always have my husband with me to help. It’s an issue with an awful lot of places, it’s so blatant.”

She added: “I’d like to see people being a bit more considerate. I know there are going to be more parking officers in place. Maybe we need a good clampdown on parking in the area.”

It is not the first time this issue has been raised, after Michael McVeigh, chairman of Egremont Town Council, described the situation as a ‘fiasco’ at a council meeting in February. He had received a number of complaints from members of the public and hoped that an increased number of enforcement officers patrolling the area would deter motorists.

Cars pulling out on to Main Street have also had difficulties due to a restricted view of the road.

The road is under the control of Cumbria County Council’s highways department and town councillors are currently working with county council representatives to find a solution to the problem.
