The message was spelled out by both Archbishop of York John Sentamu – the university’s chancellor – and the university’s new vice-chancellor Julie Mennell at a ceremony at Carlisle Cathedral.
Graduates were asked to give a round of applause to thank those who had supported them both emotionally and financially.
Receiving their bachelor of science degrees were students who had been studying adult nursing, health care studies and mental health nursing.
Earlier this week, degrees were handed out to students who had obtained degrees in engineering, medical imaging and forestry.
As has become tradition, at the end of every ceremony, the university’s choir sang Happy by Pharrell Williams, with Archbishop Sentamu accompanying them on percussion. Those who had been studying for masters, postgraduate and professional graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and foundation degrees also received their honours.
Tanya Rigg, from Cleator Moor, graduated with a degree in adult nursing.
The 26-year-old said: “I’ve already got a job at the West Cumberland Hospital, where I’ve been working since September. It’s been great so far.”
