A charity in memory of an Egremont teenager has achieved its £150,000 target.

Danica Maxwell died aged 15 on December 22, 2010, after battling three brain tumours. Before her death, she had discussed plans for Danica’s Dream Fund to help children and young people who are seriously ill.

And this week, the charity announced it had reached its magnificent total at a balloon release on the sixth anniversary of Danica’s death.

John Maxwell, Danica’s dad, said: “We’re really chuffed to bits we reached the target. Now we will have to set some more goals!

“We were really pleased with the turn out and the purple balloons for Danica. A few of her friends couldn’t make it but they sent me a message and a pic of them lighting a candle or letting a balloon off wherever they were. It’s good to know she’s still in their thoughts.’’

Charity organiser and Dream Fund supporter, Mark Andrews, also handed over money at the release held at Egremont Rugby League Club. The charity had hoped to hit its target by Christmas Day.

“Mark had donations from people he knew which helped us reach the target as well as family friends and people who didn’t even know Danica at all,’’ John added. “We can’t thank them enough and I know Danica would also be chuffed with how good the charity is doing.’’

In September, Danica’s family marked what would have been her 21st birthday.

And support for the Fund continues to be offered by the entertainment world, with Deacon Blue’s Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh becoming the latest stars to wear its purple wristband during a recent concert in Newcastle. They follow a host of celebrities, including musicians, soap stars and wrestlers, to have their photo taken wearing the band.
