Danica's Dream Fund which supports seriously ill children has reached a new staggering total of £135,000.

The Egremont fund -- in memory of 15-year-old Danica Maxwell -- was further this week boosted by £4,500 donated by members of Sellafield's Prospect union.

Cash was raised after the union donated five pounds to charity for each member who transferred payment of fees to direct debit.

Steve Nicholson, Prospect Sellafield Ltd branch secretary, said: "We support many excellent local charities, through various forms, and Danica’s Dream Fund is one of those.

"It provides much needed support and financial assistance to children and their families, fighting childhood cancer and we are proud to be able to donate to the fund.''

Danica's dad, John, said: "We are chuffed to bits the charity is going from strength to strength.''

The teenager died in December 2010 following a brave battle with three brain tumours.

Upcoming fundraising events for the fund include a charity fun day including a football match, bouncy castle and auction; a car boot sale and a race night.

John said: "People are also doing this year's Great North Run which will be held on what would have been Danica's 21st birthday, so that will be extra special.''

Craig Wright, John's friend, is also aiming to complete seven marathons in seven days. He can be sponsored by going to Everyclick.

Some of those who have recently raised money for the fund are:

Workington UTC (£200); Danica's Ball organised by Caroline McCarthy (£3007); Family friend Malcolm Sutton (£500); Oasis dental surgery and Luis Gonzalez (£350); Jackie Clifford (£115); Sarah Murphy (£125).

Claire and Jason Jackson (£476); Egremont Today (£500); Easter prize bingo (£2,930); Glow in the Dark Run and Mark Wear (£568); West Lakes Academy (£452); Christmas goodies and Danica calendars (£1,800).
