A charity set up in memory of an Egremont teenager could be up for a prestigious Pride of Britain award.

Danica's Dream Fund – in memory of 15-year-old Danica Maxwell – will know tomorrow (Fri) if it has been nominated for ITV Fundraiser of the Year.

The family of Danica, who died in 2010 after battling three brain tumours, were featured on TV this week to tell their story about setting up the charity.

Her dad, John, said he was surprised and delighted to be nominated. "Whatever happens, it is just great to see the fund receive such recognition.''

If successful, the family will be invited to the national ceremony, held at Grosvenor House and organised by the Daily Mirror, on November 1. The show, hosted by Carol Vordeman, is watched by five million viewers.

Danica's Dream Fund currently stands at £140,000 with money continuing to be collected to help seriously-ill children and young people. Some of the more recent requests saw the charity help a family, whose father had lost his job, fund a stay while his child was in hospital, while the fund also paid for treats such as paying for cinema or restaurant trips or a new mobile phone.

John said: "The fund keeps me busy and it is what Danica wanted. We know what those families are going through and we try and help put a smile on the kids' faces.''
