A danger driver who led police on a high speed night-time chase after snatching a woman's car in Cumbria has been sent to prison.

Steven Jones, 40, was handed a 12-month sentence at Carlisle Crown Court today.

He had admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking and having no insurance following an incident on June 28.

The court heard Jones jumped into a Vauxhall Corsa in central Millom at around 10.15pm. This had been left with keys in the ignition and the engine running while the driver visited a cash machine.

Police pursued Jones, who travelled in excess of 90mph northbound on the A595.

He crossed a double white line, went around a blind corner on the wrong side of the road and drove at twice the 40mph speed limit through Gosforth. A police stinger eventually brought him to a stop.

On arrest, Jones, of Dalzell Street, Moor Row - who had been drinking - stated: "I just wanted to get home".

The court heard Jones - a man with 31 offences on his record - was "devastated" by what he had done having recently undergone rehabilitation.

Sending him to prison, Judge Peter Hughes QC said: "If you had stopped to think, you had to realise that all that lay ahead of you was disaster."
