More than 60 cyclists turned to pedal power on Saturday as part of a charity ride.

Members of Team XIII, a cycling group for people of all ages and abilities, did a 60-mile route for the palliative care unit at the West Cumberland Hospital and charity The Solway Hall, at Whitehaven Civic Hall, which helps to keep the venue running.

The group has also done a 145-mile bike ride to York, a sponsored spin at Whitehaven Carnival and a Northern Soul night at the Civic Hall to boost funds.

Following Saturday's ride, the total now stands at £6,594 which will be split between the charities. The cash has been raised through sponsorship, donations and ticket sales for the Northern Soul night.

Paul Morgan, from Team XIII, said: "It was brilliant. I'm very pleased with the support we've had both financially and morally and our sponsors have provided us with venues."

Members Paul Kelly and Phillip Casson were the main organisers of the events.

Members have organised another fundraising event in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance which will take place on Saturday, October 22 at Lowca Rugby League Club. It will feature entertainment.

Tickets are £5 from Paul on 07951 023623.
