An inspirational woman who works tirelessly for charity is this year’s Cumbria Woman of the Year.

Sue Kaveney, who runs her own HR consultancy firm in Carlisle, is a volunteer case worker for the Royal British Legion, raises money for Cancer Research UK and helped people affected by the 2015 floods.

Sue, of Twickenham Court, was a key figure at the Greystone Community Centre during the Carlisle floods, helping families reach loves ones, liaising with insurance companies and raising awareness of people’s plight on social media.

She is also a trustee at Carlisle United Community Sports Trust and has campaigned on behalf of former Gurkha Regiment soldiers to secure beds for veterans who were sleeping on floors.

Last year, she was named volunteer of the year at The Cumberland News Community Heroes Awards.

She said: "I'm speechless and humbled. Everyone in the room was a winner. I just do it because it's something that drives me and I get real satisfaction from helping people."

The 28th Cumbria Women of the Year awards at Laura Ashley The Belsfield hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere, also recognised fundraiser Patricia Turnbull, from Southwaite, who was presented with the Cumbria Life Lifetime Achievement Award.

Patricia has raised thousands of pounds for charities over the years including the Great North Air Ambulance, Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, from which she has recently stepped down as chair of the Cumbria branch.

Pat, whose family farms at Harrington Ling, has organised more than 50 fundraising events for the farming welfare charity.

She said: "I'm totally overwhelmed. You never think that you'll be in contention because everyone has done so much. I've just done what I have felt is right over the years and enjoyed doing it. Cumbria is special and the farming community is very important to me."

More than 70 fundraisers, community volunteers and campaigners attended the annual lunch after being nominated by members of the public. The awards celebrate Cumbrian women doing extraordinary things in their communities.
