The man at the helm of the county's leading tourism organisation has announced he is stepping down.

Ian Stephens, managing director of Cumbria Tourism, is leaving - although it is unclear where he is moving on to.

In an announcement this morning, Mr Stephens said "now is the time" to let someone else take over the "challenging" role.

The 57-year-old said: “It has been an honour and privilege to work in one of the most exciting and dynamic sectors in UK’s economy.

"I have loved working for Cumbria Tourism and with exceptional people through major changes.

"I’m not planning to retire and am looking forward to pursuing a number of projects in due course.

"After 14 years as a director of Cumbria Tourism, I feel I need a change and the next six months seems a good time to make the move."

Mr Stephens added: “I also think it’s a good thing for Cumbria Tourism and chance for a fresh start with a new constitution and new leadership.

"Cumbria Tourism is in good shape and in the strongest position it’s been for many years, with great potential to grow."

He has pledged to see through a "smooth transition" to his successor.

Mr Stephens took on the role in 2005 and has helped see through both the Foot and Mouth Recovery and Flood Recovery campaigns.
