Live music, free food and bouncy castles were enjoyed at a community picnic in Whitehaven.

Hundreds of people turned out to the event at Castle Park on Sunday.

A variety of local acts performed including Robert Wright, a Rod Stewart tribute act, as well as Amy Morton, Tom Salmon, Emma Dockeray, Reptilians and Whitehaven Theatre of Youth.

Hundreds of burgers were also given out.

The community event was the brainchild of Whitehaven town councillors John Kane and Carla Arrighi. They are using cash allocated to them, from the town council, to pay for the event.

Coun Kane said: "It went very well. The food, catering and the entertainment was excellent."

The picnic in the park was officially opened by Coun Raymond Gill, ceremonial mayor of Whitehaven Town Council.

During the afternoon around 500 members of the community attended the picnic.

Coun Kane said it was "fantastic" to see so many families there.

A variety of solo acts and groups performed throughout the afternoon.

Coun Kane said the event was an opportunity for talented local solo acts and groups to showcase themselves.

He added: "The community picnic was a first. There were real positive signs that the community would welcome another one."

Coun Kane said thanks goes to town council clerk Les Abrahams for organising the event.
