A motorist involved in a crash was found to have cocaine in his system.

Police gave James Miller Todd, 43, a roadside drugs test after his yellow Peugeot car was involved in a collision at Broughton on Wednesday, January 25, a court heard.

When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed Todd was slurring his speech and unsteady on his feet.

They gave him a roadside drug test and it proved positive for cocaine.

The defendant, of Howgill Street, Whitehaven, admitted drug-driving when he appeared before magistrates at Carlisle.

Todd’s lawyer, Craig Smith, told the court the defendant did not regularly take drugs but had taken the cocaine at a party two days before.

“He felt perfectly fine physically to drive,” said the lawyer, “and the collision didn’t occur as a result of the drugs.

"The ABS brakes in his car locked and the car skidded.

“The reason he was staggering around after the crash, was he had been in the collision.”

Magistrates imposed an 18-week curfew, banned him from driving for 30 months and ordered him to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
