OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD 3D crafts were designed by imaginative youngsters who were inspired by one of the first dogs in space.

Rosehill on the Road's Messel’s Makers family workshop took inspiration from Laika the Spacedog and youngsters created space helmets, space stations and rockets.

The half-term event at Parton Village Hall yesterday (Friday) saw dozens of children get creative with recycled materials.

Laika, was a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, who was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957. She who became one of the first animals in space and the first animal to orbit the Earth

Associate artist with Rosehill, Jac Addison, was on hand to guide children through the creative process and she praised the imagination of the youngsters taking part.

"It's amazing to see what the children do, even though they have a bit of help from the adults," she said. "They just go for it and it's quite surprising what they come up with.

"I am here to make suggestions, but the push is for children to become artists in their own right."

She added that Messel’s Makers will be creating a Pintrest page soon to highlight some of the work created by the children.

Parents at the event praised the work of Rosehill for the event and keeping children occupied through the half-term holiday.

The craft event was run in partnership with the Laika the Spacedog opera which is being performed at St Bees School, Memorial Hall, 11 June at 2pm. For tickets and more information, call 01946 692422.
