Talented Copeland youngsters and adults have triumphed at Workington Musical Festival.

Whitehaven singer Vanessa Turpin has scooped numerous trophies, including the prestigious Williams Gold cup, for her performances at the annual event.

She was awarded the Margaret Heron trophy in the opera class, the Joseph Lewis trophy for her duet with her sister Gillian Rothery and the Florence Ellwood trophy for the soprano class.

She then went on to win the Williams Gold cup as the overall winner. Vanessa also shared the Ivander trophy with Sophie Mills from Workington. This is awarded to the competitor or group gaining the highest mark in all adult classes.

Vanessa said: "It's always an achievement to win. I've won the Williams Gold cup before; the first time is the biggest achievement but it's lovely to win it again and again. It's difficult to get into the finals, so it's a good achievement."

She praised the talented young entrants who take part in a range of classes at the festival.

"It's good to see the young children coming through. It gives them so much confidence. It's not just about going onto stage - it's the confidence it gives them outside of the festivals," Vanessa added.

Choirs, adults and children from across West Cumbria have showcased their talents at the festival which is held at the Carnegie Theatre.

There was a host of winners from Copeland, including children from St Bridget's School in Egremont. They achieved four first place finishes in the music and verse section with Mischa McFadden and Michelle Kwarteng scoring top marks and Arien Van Den Elzen also gaining the highest marks in two separate categories.

And Macey Hewer, of Distington, won the verse speaking category for girls aged 10 to under 12.

Kath's Chorus from Whitehaven won the Glee Club category and Jasmin Smith won the category for vocal solo most promise.
