WAr heroes were honoured across Copeland with touching Armistice Day tributes from schoolchildren.

In Egremont, children from St Bridget's Catholic Primary School gathered with members of the public at the war memorial on Main Street.

Father John Mark Agulefo and Edward Dixon, from Egremont Royal British Legion, led a short service and a two minutes silence was observed. The children then laid poppy wreaths around the war memorial.

"It was a good turnout, it all went well, especially with the kids putting the poppy wreaths on the memorial, and the weather has been kind to us," said John Edwards, from the legion.

"On Sunday the High Sheriff Richard Lee will lay a wreath on behalf of the Queen."

And Suzanne Smith, headteacher at St Bridget's, said: "We always bring our year two students because they study remembrance as part of their curriculum. They made a wreath in class and all of our junior classes also made one.

"Some of our year six students wrote poems to go inside the wreaths."

While in Whitehaven pupils at St James' C of E Infant School took part in a remembrance service with parents and teachers in St James Church.

The pupils have been learning about the poppy and shared their newly-acquired knowledge with their parents.

"It was really well attended," said headteacher Jill Eaton. "The children have worked really hard.

"It was a special assembly with the children sharing information about what the poppy represents and what Remembrance Sunday is about. Once we got back to school we did the two minutes silence as well."
