Businesses along one of Cumbria’s main highways are eagerly anticipating the completion of major roadworks.

The roadworks along the A66 – between Keswick and Cockermouth – have been in force for about 10 months.

While workmen have been on the road there has been a speed limit of 40mph, a temporary traffic light system and complete road closures.

It has often meant significantly increased travelling times for motorists using the stretch of roads.

Contractors Kier Highways has now announced that the expected completion date for the works will be this Monday.

It’s music to the ears of businesses that rely on the road for custom, including The Pheasant Inn, near Bassenthwaite Lake.

Matthew Wylie, managing director of the Pheasant, said: “We’re all delighted and very relieved at the removal of the roadworks along the A66, they have been in place for some time now and we are just excited to get back to business as normal and welcoming our customers back to The Pheasant.”

Work began earlier this year to resurface and flood-proof the dual carriageway by Bassenthwaite Lake.
