Thousands of people turned out for Whitehaven's Christmas lights switch-on.

Ariana Granda and Little Mix tribute acts took to the stage with the Mayor of Whitehaven, councillor Brian O'Kane, and fairytale characters for the glittery event.

It followed an action-packed programme of events including a land train for youngsters and their families and stalls featuring food, Christmas gifts and goodies.

The event has been organised by Whitehaven Town Council.

Crowds gathered to watch a variety of live acts on the CFM stage on Lowther Street. These included the tribute acts, who performed the hits by Ariana Grande and Little Mix, while The Voice finalist Jolan Gidney-Craigen, showcased a number of tunes including his new single.

He said: "It's been a year in the making. There's a lot more to come."

The Pitch Perfect Youth Choir, led by Cory Spedding, sang a number of tunes.

Cory said she was delighted the youngsters who are from across West Cumbria performed at the event.

She said: "It just means everything to be able to showcase their talents in my town."
There was also music by Northern Threads and performance by Stage Stars, Pop Steps and A&B Stage School.

Youngsters even the chance to meet Father Christmas and fairytale characters onboard the land train.

The event featured CFM's roadshow and Taylor's funfair.

Among those enjoying the festivities was family was Claire and Ross Cape with children Alfie, aged nine, and Macey, aged seven, and gran June Nelson.

Macey said: "I really liked the train. We sat next to the princesses."

Samantha Jackman, Whitehaven business owner, attended the switch-on with her husband Carl and their daughter Annie, aged seven.

Mrs Jackson said she wanted to support the town, and said her daughter had enjoyed the Little Mix tribute act.

Coun O'Kane spoke about the event, saying: "It's been a really lively atmosphere. The weather has been great. People seem to be appreciative o the fact that a lot of work has gone into putting this on."

A street collection was held for the mayor's charity, Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Numerous Christmas festivities activities were also set to take place at the Solway Hall on Lowther Street, including visits from the popular Paw Patrol and Santa.
