A Cleator Moor family-run firm will celebrate its 35th birthday next week with the help of a Workington speedway prospect.

Kirkland Carpets, which is based at Cleator Moor, was started by Michael Dunsmoir and is now principally run by Michael's sons Alistair and Andrew, along with Andrew's wife Jacky.

The family will hold a birthday bash at The Hub in Workington town centre between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, February 25 and, being keen speedway fans, have invited current 500cc British Youth Champion Kyle Bickley to help.

Kirkland Carpets were Workington Comets' first ever main team sponsor in 2000 and also sponsor West Cumbrian rider Craig Cook and young Kyle, so Alistair said it was a no brainer to have the sport represented at the event.

He added: "It's a bit of a milestone and obviously over the years we've had to keep up with the times and changes in trends.

"We do all aspects of flooring now from preparation to fitting.

"We have a lot of regular customers and a lot of people like that when they come in they know us, there's a trust there with it being family run.

"That's how we've competed against bigger firms.

"We're sponsoring Kyle as well and he's kicking off on his adult career now.

"Basically we've tried to put as much back into the community as we can and people can see that if they spend with us it stays here."

There will be competitions on the day and CFM Cash for Kids mascot Courage the Cat will be there as Kirkland Carpets will be giving 10 per cent of their takings in February to the charity.
