After gold medal success in Rio and the Tour of Britain inspiring the nation, west Cumbria is gearing up for its very own cycling festival.

Hundreds of Lycra enthusiasts will take part in the West Lakes Cycling Festival in Cleator Moor which starts today and runs all weekend.

There are three events in this year's festival and cyclists can now enter the festival’s centrepiece race, the Tour de Moor, online.

The mammoth cycle starts at 1pm on Sunday, September 18 at Cleator Moor town square.

The route offers some short, sharp climbs and the opportunity for spectators to view riders at Steel Brow or as they ride through the town as part of the lapped route.

More than 100 riders are expected to take part in the race, which is now in its third year.

The festival starts today with a Puddings and Prosecco ride starting at 6pm.

This starts and finishes at the Civic Hall, and riders have the choice of two distances – 10 or 17 miles.

The event finishes with puddings and Prosecco at the Civic. Entry for this ride is £10.

On the Saturday is a Sky Ride local event which starts at the Copeland Bowling Centre at 1pm. This is a guided ride which heads out towards Ennerdale. Entry is free but is restricted to 30 places.

This year, the event is being supported by Cyclewise Cockermouth, British Cycling, Copeland Borough Council, Cleator Moor Civic Hall and Cleator Moor Town Council.

Organiser Jo Wear said: “We are looking forward to another fantastic weekend of cycling based around Cleator Moor.

“Once again, we would like to thank Bill Morley at Cleator Moor Civic Centre and both Cleator Moor Town and Copeland councils for their continued support.”
