Generous pupils at Whitehaven Academy have raised cash and given donations to causes this Christmas.

Students and staff raised £106.71 by holding a Christmas jumper day in aid of Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Two Christmas hampers of chocolate and sweets were also donated by the Whitehaven Academy Action Group.

The school has also given 81 shoeboxes of presents to the annual Operation Christmas Child appeal.

And a Christmas fair and show held at the academy has raised £1,089 for its Rock Challenge programme.

Teacher Abigail Skillen said: "The students and staff worked fantastically hard to create a Christmas Fair which could be enjoyed by the whole community.

"Stalls included Annie Moon Makes, The Gift Box, Wendy Birds, Juicy Designs by Lucy, Sweet Scents of Home, Tropic Skincare, a Christmas Photo Booth and Hook a duck, provided by Steve the Set Guy; as well as various other stalls run by the Rock Challenge stage crew, students raising funds for the Year 11 Prom and Camps International."

The school said special mention goes to Abigail Skillen, Clare Dawson, Katy Bowman, Chelsea Powe and Holly Watson for their hard work in creating the event.

Miss Skillen said: "Following the Christmas Fair, students from the Whitehaven Academy then showcased their talents to a busy audience of staff, parents, friends and family. The audience were wowed by a variety of acts, followed by a sneak preview of this year’s Rock Challenge performance, which has been choreographed by Holly Wilbraham, Kerry Ann Halcrow and Laura Stewart."

She added: "We would like to say a huge thank you to all who came to the fair and watched the performance. We managed to raise over £1000, which is a great step toward our journey to Rock Challenge 2018.

"A special thank you to local businesses for their support and generous donations from: Listers Furnishers, Richardson’s, Dixons, Bazaar Hair, The Beacon Museum, The Rum Story, Flavour Workington, Pies and More, The Globe, Morrison’s Whitehaven, Gaiety and Plaza Cinemas."
