Rugby league star Garry Schofield is heading to Whitehaven to help pay tribute to former Haven hero Matthew “Jimmy” Dalton.

Mr Schofield OBE who is a member of the British Rugby League Hall of Fame – which comprises the greatest 21 rugby league players in the country – is set to attend a special charity event in June.

It is being organised in memory of Mr Dalton, 53, who died in November.

His body was found in Whitehaven’s Castle Park, by family members. It followed a two-day search by emergency services.

Mr Dalton, a father-of-two and grandfather-of-four, had written a goodbye note to his loved ones. His family believe he died following an overdose.

Mr Dalton’s niece Chelle Holliday is organising the fundraiser, which is being held on June 3.

She said the event - set to be take place at Kells Rugby League Club - may change to a bigger venue if needed.

Cash raised will go to Papyrus, the national UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide, and Mind, the mental health charity.

Ms Holliday said: “James helped so many people by being a drug and alcohol counsellor.

“I wanted to do something for him to show how much he meant to people and hopefully turn his passing into something positive.

“He had time for everybody. He turned so many lives around.”

The event, which begins at 6.30pm, will feature an auction, raffle, music and buffet.

Hosting the auction will be Mr Schofield, retired professional rugby league footballer of the 1980s and 1990s, who played with Mr Dalton for Great Britain.

Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington is also set to support the event, by giving donations.

Ms Holliday is asking for any businesses or individuals who would like to donate any prizes to contact her.

Tickets for the fundraiser are £7. People can contact Chelle Holliday on 07808020123. Tickets are also set to go on sale at The Pack Horse, on Lowther Street, Whitehaven.
