A special market helped to raise nearly £400 for a homeless hostel in Egremont.

The town's Calderwood House joined with Egremont farmers, craft and Fairtrade market for its first charity market, with traders turning out in force to support the cause.

Sandra Dempsey, a volunteer at the homeless hostel and owner of cake company 'Cake Junkie', organised the event in Egremont Market Hall, selling cakes and serving bacon butties to hungry visitors.

The hostel's founder Rachel Holliday said: "We are coming up to our busiest time of year and every penny is needed to keep our doors open to the homeless. The day was amazing! We never stopped serving tea and coffee.

"The committee of Egremont farmers, craft and Fairtrade Market were approached by our volunteer, Sandra, and she asked them to support us at Calderwood House.

"It was agreed that it would be a great way to put on an event for the local community while raising funds for Calderwood."

Co-op, in Egremont, donated Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits for the market while music charity Soundwave provided entertainment.

Mrs Holliday said: "It made a fantastic atmosphere and I am so thankful to the community of Egremont for supporting this event and really hope we do another soon."

While Mrs Dempsey said: "The preparation and organisation for the event was hard work, but I enjoyed seeing the cakes fly off the table and was very happy to be there in support of Calderwood House"

The farmers, craft and Fairtrade market is held on the third Friday of each month at Egremont Market Hall. Two additional markets will be held in the run up to Christmas on the first Friday in November and December.

Chair of the market committee Helen Shipton-Smith said: "We were happy to help organise this special one off Saturday market to help raise funds for Calderwood, thanks to our loyal customers for your support"

And treasurer Carole Woodman said: "The additional profit from stall rent raised will be used to support Fairtrade communities devastated by the recent hurricanes and extreme weather conditions worldwide."

Upcoming market dates are October 20, November 3, November 17, December 1 and December 15.
